Biblical Answers to the World Mission Society Church of God

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.--1 John 4:1

Are you or a loved one struggling with this group? Do you need Biblical answers about the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCoG or CoGWMS), their founder Ahnsahnghong (Ahn Sahng/Sang-Hong) or their current leader "Mother Jerusalem" (a.k.a. "Heavenly Mother God," Zang/Zahng Gil-Jah, or Chung Gil Cha)? Thank you for coming here. I hope my blog helps you. Questions and comments are always welcome.

Leaving the World Mission Society Church of God

Since I started this blog (and even before) many people have written to me, and I always ask if they will share their story.  How did you (or your loved one) get involved in the World Mission Society Church of God, and what finally prompted you to leave?

Even though personal details vary, ex-members of the World Mission Society Church of God have many similarities in their stories.  I've found 5 main reasons former members have shared with me in their stories.  Here they are, in no particular order:
  • The teachings of the WMSCOG contradict the teachings of the Bible.  For example, they take verses out of context and distort their meaning, and misinterpret other verses whose meaning is clear.  Here are a few specific examples.
  • The behavior of the people (especially leaders) in the WMSCOG contradicts the teachings of the Bible.  For example, even though the church claims do what the Bible says, they find their leaders promoting lying, divorce, gossip, and such.
  • The teachings and practices of the WMSCOG contradict themselves.  (I call this "internal evidence.")  For example, they keep the feasts of God incorrectly according to their own requirements, and they deny some teachings of Ahnsahnghong himself.
  • They realize the church's behavior lines up with destructive mind control tacticsFor example, they weren't told about Ahnsahnghong or Zang Gil-Jah until after joining, and there was a heavy demand on their time and money, to the exclusion of their other God-given responsibilities.  Check out more stories of personal experiences in the WMSCOG.
  • Lastly, some were pushed out (or kicked out).  For example, they couldn't live up to the expectations of the WMSCOG, either in behavior or giving (tithing).  These seem to have had the hardest time, feeling condemned for failing, until they realize one or more of the other, above reasons.  Then they feel blessed to have been "rescued" despite themselves.

Here is another list that shows more specific reasons, Top 10 Reasons People Cease to Believe in the WMSCOG, which you can find on the website Examining the WMSCOG.  It's well worth your time to explore that website, especially since it has the perspective of an ex-member (who writes many of the articles).

No matter which was the main reason for leaving, members who leave continue to share similarities in what happens next in their stories.  They must go through a healing and recovery process.  And the longer they've been in the cult, the more difficult the process is.

If you are going through that currently, please know that there is help out there.  There are cult counselors who can help you in person.  There are also pastors at your local churches who can connect you with the help you need.  There are books that can help you in your healing (such as "Releasing the Bonds" by Steven Hassan).  And there are places like our facebook group, where you can talk to other former members and help each other.  You don't have to do it alone.

  1. I am desperate. My daughter encountered 2 WMSCOG people in a parking lot while she was in her car leaving a grocery store last week. They asked if she had been crying, and then they asked her if she knew about the God the Mother and then invited her to a bible study. From what I read about WMS this is a common tactic to attract new members (victims). My daughter did not celebrate her own Catholic Mass except on holidays, but I don't know what else they told her but she sunk into it going to their bible studies, church, coffee socials 6 our of 7 days. She is coming home denouncing the Catholic faith, saying we are all doomed for not following the Bible, that practicing any derivative of the "true" faith is heresy. She is now celebrating Passover on the Jewish calendar, and who knows what Easter will bring. This has caused GREAT conflict, arguments, anxiety and tears on my part. She is perfectly calm in feeling she has found a true meaning to her existence. I should note that my daughter was diagnosed with anxiety, OCD,and ADHD which she is on medication for all of these disorders (which is another story). Right now I just want her to STOP, but her frame of mind is not flexible to see anything else. I fear she will try to coerce our younger daughter towards this perspective/cult whatever it is called. We are trying to reach clergy in our parish to get guidance and have them talk to her, but I fear she will not want to listen. What are we parents to do? The testimonies I read about this organization was enough to convince me that no good can come from this. Thanks, A Mom fighting demonic forces...

    4. Depending on what's going on at those "bible studies, coffee socials, and church" there could be cause to worry. Certainly you can think of situations where that would be true.

Hello, I am a ex-member of the wmscog in Singapore and I am proud to say that. I understand the position you are in as the two recruiters, [name] and [name] have already tried their best to convinced me a lot of times. (not trying to put them in the bad light BTW) I got easily distracted by this Christian farce, oh and just so you know, I am the only son of the family, of free thinkers and Buddhist. The point is, you need to learn how to use the ability to research and help rebuke your daughters beliefs. Here are some red flags, they prescribed to me that the world is going to end soon thank to the so called measurement of the doomsday clock, which is legitimate but wrong in a sense, the graph shows that doomsday was avoided 3 times, especially 1988, which was one of the years that the wmscog proclaimed to be judgement day. The two recruiters dismiss this as a prophecy, to which I will call it heresy, they used the second coming of christ and their god the mother interpretation to give a incomplete answer to why 1988 was part of the prophesy. They also dismissed the 2012 one as a made up story, but a missionary himself named Ron stated he was taught that 2012 was the end of the world, then to his juniors, his family. It was shocking. The recruiters also dismiss the fact that members of the church should pay 10% of their income to the church as a straight 'no'. This is incredibly dishonest, oh wait, there's more, Wmscog is recognised as a good organisation for volunteering thanks to the queen's award. This and other awards is used by recruiters to state and verify the integrity of the wmscog. It is Insane, they would use anything at their disposal to convince people to join the wmscog. As I have watched countless arguments between the wmscog and ex members of this organisations resulted in endless infernos of us or them situations of anger, fear and hatred. It became clear to me that there are things that you and your daughter should investigate. It has been 5 years after the OP's post. I hope that anyone who see this regardless of ex members, members or strangers of multiple religions. Please let each other know that there is still hope for this world.

  2. The Members of the World Mission Society Church of God are in a False Heaven built by misinterpretation of Scriptures, The scripture are Holy & they cannot be interpreted using Human wisdom. World Mission Society Church of God presents Ahnsahnghong as the Christ(Anointed one) but where is Ahsahnghong now? This question is not widely not asked by majority of World Mission Society Church of God's member they presume that Ahnsahnghong has ascended to Heaven but the reality is: "He is still in his Grave?", how can some one who is still in the Grave save anyone who trusts in him? May the Lord Yeshua lead these people from darkness to light. Let's pray that Zhang Ghil Jha herself would confess the truth to the members of her church.

    1. Hmm. Jesus saved a few while he was alive. His disciples did the rest of the work. So what's the problem?

      Delete
    2. "What's the problem?" The problem is implicit in what you wrote...Jesus came to earth so that ALL mankind be saved, not just a few. If you deny this, then you deny Jesus and are worshiping a false god.

  3. Everything on this sight is false. For one, if God were too come IN THE FLESH as the bible clearly and jesussaid HE WOULD a second time.. then as a man in the flesh, HE HAS TO GO THROUGH A PHYSICAL DEATH AGAIN! Doesn't mean that SPIRITUALLY he's goimg to die! Two DIFFERENT deaths! Two, Jesus said that when he came again that he would also bear a NEW NAME. It's the same concept now as then! When jesus was herw, it had already been prophesied that God would come in the flesh as a man and woild bear a new name. Who were the only people to recognize Jesus?? His disciples! How? Not from miracles, but BIBLE PROPHECY! Only God can fulfill His own prophecy!! It predicted through scripture where he'd come again which was south korea. He fulfilled the remaining years to preach the gospel which JESUS DIDNT FULFILL! It was supposed to had been 40 years! Jesus preached 3 before he was crucified! Ahn Sahng Hong fulfilled ALL of the prophesies on second coming christ and preached the remaining 37 years!! And just like jesus never proclaimedto be god, neither did he!! He wanted us to recognize him through his word! Its a test of our faith and belief in his PROPHESIES! The bible is a literal blue map on how to receive oir salvation and recognize christ in the flesh and thats how you recognize the true christs from the false people CLAIMING to be him in the last days! Clearly whoever made this site was SPIRITUALLY blind!! I read about this church before really going and decided to see whats so bad and false, but have found nothing but truth! They teach SCRIPTURE AND PROPHECY RIGHT OUT OF THE BIBLE IN FRONT OF YOU as you read yourself. If you went and tested the watera you'd see! No false person could make this up and use gods words to glorify himself because the bible would contradict their words. HOWEVER, nothing I've learned can contradict itself! Scripture BACKS UP OTHER SCRIPTURES THEN SO DOES HISTORY!

    1. Hi Anonymous. I like your comment because it's a nice summary of wmscog reasoning. Although I've addressed many (if not all) of your points in my articles, I think a response to your comment would make a nice article in itself. Please look for it soon.

    2. Anonymous is Correct. Everything about this site is false and only left for your interpretation. You want people to come out of a church that preaches about salvation. Well once they come out who will lead them? you? are you wiser than GOD? if you have rejected the church based on your own personal beliefs than let that be your choice, but don't try to lead others in the same path of confusion. Please Study the bible people your teachings are so false.

    3. The information on my site is well documented. If you think something here is false, please be specific so that I can address it and correct if needed.

All Christian churches that I know of "preach about salvation" (including the Catholic Church). You said, "You want people to come out of a church that preaches about salvation." How different is that from the wmscog wanting people to come out of their own church that also "preaches salvation"?

You said, "if you have rejected the church based on your own personal beliefs than let that be your choice, but don't try to lead others in the same path of confusion." The same can be said about wmscog members who preach to others to come out of the mainstream Christian (and Catholic) churches.

You said, "Well once they come out who will lead them?" I hope they will find an honest Bible-believing church to help them on their walk of faith.

You said, "Please Study the bible people your teachings are so false." How about if you tell me specifically which teachings are false so that I can examine them?

I believe the wmscog's teachings about "mother god," humans being fallen angels, God's ability to lie (and that it's acceptable for members to lie), and how we are saved are all among their false teachings. Are you willing to examine them yourself? I hope so.

    4. God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. - Just a thought (no new name) "there is only one name in heaven and on earth by which we are saved, the name of Jesus"

But if you want to stop your involvement with this group, just go ahead and stop. They may pester and pressure you for a while, just be strong and hold your ground.

    2. Interesting, is that all you can comment? Can you give anymore advice? How to live with the guilt?

    3. Hi Jesslyn. I'm sorry, I've been away from my blog for a while, but I'd like to reply anyway in case you or anyone else still needs help with dealing with guilt.

If you are feeling guilty because of how you treated loved ones while you were involved in the group, find a way to apologize to them. Tell them you realize you made a mistake and that you are sorry for any hurtful words or actions, and ask them to forgive you. It may be hard to say, but I'm sure they would be eager to express their forgiveness and love for you.

If you are a Christian who became caught in a false doctrine like this, then it's understandable that you would feel the guilt of sin after realizing it and turning back to the truth. If that has happened to you, please remember that God forgives, whatever the sin. He forgives us faster than we forgive ourselves. Talk to a pastor or read up on God's forgiveness. You can also find resources on "cult recovery." Plus, you can let God use your experience for good (Rom. 8:28) perhaps by becoming stronger, more compassionate, and more educated in matters of faith and doctrine.

I hope you are feeling much better about it by now, Jesslyn. Blessings to you.

  6. These people are all over my campus. They are disrespectful and literally everywhere. After a while I figured that they target universities because we college students are vulnerable, easily convinced, and to a certain extent lost on topics such as religion. I never got involved but my best friend is involved and she has never been the same since the first day she joined. There is so much wrong with these people, i don't even know where to begin. First off, they give out baptisms like it is nothing literally any one can get baptized at any time even if you don't know them yet. Secondly, they meet at the most ungodly hours, she goes from about 11pm up until 3-4am. She dropped out of school. Quit her job. She is loosing friends by the second, she has not spoke to her parents in over a month. and she swears that anyone that isn't following this cult of hers will go to Hell. She finds my beliefs to be a joke and a laughing matter although she is following this God the mother. it is very sad that people believe their words, and it is even more upsetting that they leave behind loved ones and things that once mattered to them. Open your eyes people!

    1. I feel your pain. An entire family from my church got sucked into this cukt and my heart breaks for them. The cult got to the kids first, then the father. Lastly the wife who only began attending because she "had" to be with her husband and children. The son tried to involve me, kept inviting me to study but wouldn't tell me with whom/what church. Accused me of one thing and another, finally gave up because I fought the heresy with scripture ("It is written.") The mother was so confused , she didn't even know the name of the church she was attending, and when we had a long theological discussion, she didn't know how to answer the points I made. The best defense against these people is prayer and study of scripture. If you have children, teach them so they are armed against the devil. At university, get involved with a bible teaching fellowship or church and then work with them on campus to educate others about the gospel. I guarantee you that they will leave you alone when they see you know your scripture. You cannot "rescue" your friend, but God can. In the meantime, put on the full armor of God.

    2. So basically the idea is to self-study the Bible and then use the facts given in here and anywhere that against them to fight? If that is the option, I will try

      Delete
  7. But doesn't it make sense that children with a Father would have a mother too? I can not deny this. It makes so much sense!!! Also, when Jesus came, they said He was a blasphemer and cult leader as well. When Christ comes again, it will be in the same way, with a small group who believes and a larger group who does not. I don't want to be one who cannot believe in God just because of where he was born or because he was a human form just like me.

  8. I encountered this cult about 2 weeks ago. I had commented to a friend that I was trying to find a Christian church. She invited me to her church. I went the very 1st day they wanted to baptize me. I was skeptical from the minute they were pushing baptism on me. Then they began to talk about how we are Angels that sinned in heaven. Then I really felt something was not right. They kept telling me your flesh is fighting because it doesn't want God. It was not my flesh but the spirit of God showing me to get out. In one of the studies I kept asking questions that they simply had no answers for. Why they didn't have answers because they go based on specific teachings.I could see with my questions I caused confusion in them. They kept these 2 "Gods" hidden. The last day I began to notice pictures of a women all around the church. I asked who is this women? They completely ignored my question. That's when I decided to research and saw where I was. They are deceivers. People who don't have any knowledge of God's spirit are easy prey for them. I thank the Lord for his spirit and wisdom who live in me I was not easy prey for them. I'm recently trying to bring my friend out of there. To all the people on here that have people in this cult. Don't give up. Pray also there are number of sites that help and discredit all these false teachings. They will show how they distort the holy scriptures. In the 2nd coming there will be a rapture and if this man is who they claimed then that would have already happened and it hasn't because he is a false prophet. I am so happy that God she'd his light immediately. I never let them baptize me. It's so sad to see how many people fall into their lies. This was quite the experience.

  9. apparently this 'cult' won awards from the Obamas family and royal Queen in buckingham palace too. they are quite a number and phenomenon spread all over the world to be called a cult anymore. also they did quoted bible verses when I asked them questions few weeks ago and it is scary to know God's perspectives. coming from a catholic family i very much believe they hold more truth to what my pastors and family had wanted me to just follow blindly. and it is true there should be new covenant passover and heavenly mother too, not just old covenant passover lamb and solely a fatherly God. they had been quite courteous and sincere, most of them are koreans whom they call each other brothers and sisters? i was not comfortable with baptism because of my family issues but i will definitely go back to study the bible with them.

    1. There are issues with some of the awards they tout. Quoting Bible verses and being friendly does not indicate that they preach the truth. I hope you will do more of your own research. There is plenty out there to show that they are wrong.

    2. Even Satan can quote scripture. Salvation is through Jesus alone

    3. I assume receiving the MBE award from the Queen of England has issues too?? I applaud this church for practicing their faith and believing in the Bible (crazy thought right?)

      Delete
    4. Yes, that award has issues also, or more specifically, the wmscog's use and articles about the award. Have you looked into it on your own? Community service is admirable, but less so if it is used for self-promotion, which is what the wmscog seems to do.

      Delete
    5. Please avoid them if you are not strong in your faith and/or understanding of the scriptures. It is a cult misinterpreting the scriptures to suit their wrong beliefs. There are many hidden things they do not tell you at first, like there is a Mother God (a Korean woman that is still alive), their interpreted Holy Spirit's 'new name' is a Korean who had came and died) by claiming that they know the mysteries of God's revelation which will be revealed to you, eventually. What is there is hide in telling the Good News?! Good work is revealing the love of God towards others. Once you are saved and a believer and a follower of Jesus Christ, you need to do have fellowship with fellow believers to edify, encourage, love, comfort, help each other, etc. Let not good works be boastful of our own effort but always doing and giving glory to God. For they will know we are Christians by our love. You can avoid the uncertainty and confusion on Google: CARM Introduction to WMSCOG. Lord Jesus has finished the redemptive work by taking away our sins. He died on the cross for us when he said, IT IS FINISHED! He completed the work of the Father on the cross. There is much to study from the scriptures, ask for the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you. If you do not want to be mislead, it is best NOT to attend any WMSCOG bible study classes due to their wrong beliefs. You can try looking for BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) if there are any your area. This is a good bible study group following sound doctrines from the Bible, nothing more and nothing less. They have weekly bible study classes. Seek help and find out the truth. God Bless!

  10. I empatise, but with me, it's my mum who has joined something like this (another religious org). As a daughter there's nothing much I can do about it, every time my dad and I talk to her about this she seems offended like we think that she is incapable to making right decisions. After all, it's... different... but it's not a something illegal or anything. Oh well. She doesn't have any basic idea of religion, she just believes whatever miracles and "truths" she hears and sees on Facebook. sigh.

  13. Hi all and to genny, I have read all of your comments about this group – WMSCOG.
There are some Zions in Hanoi and around Vietnam, for sure. I personally have a sense of CHAOS within the Earth, among nations and the Judgement Day before one of their followers talks to me in the Banking Academy campus.
I have been baptized on Friday, 11 of August, 2017. in 9PM to be exact. And after I attended their ceremony (I think it is the Sabbath Rest), I told my mother that I want to buy a Bible to study. However, my mom refused to let me buy that book, and she also told me that, my family worship our ancestors and grandfather/mother, in short, I am a Buddist. I want to leave this group, but they wont let me go and they keep telling me to keep faith in the Heavenly Mother and Father, the Sabbath (like in Tuesday and Saturday) and things about Ahn Sahng-hong and Zhang Gil-Jah. I have known about the name Ahn Sahng-hong just right after the baptism (I haven’t read anything in the Bible yet).
Please, Genny, and others who knows the truth about this, please tell me the way to leave this group.

  15. Two lovely young ladies from South Korea came to my door yesterday. I live in South Africa. I invited them in as I am a born again believer and I am always ready to speak of my faith. Yes I am not ashamed of the Gospel. When these two young woman started bringing me " another gospel" (Galatians 1:8-9) I realized that I needed to be careful. I asked them to please first pray with me....they would not! What were they scared of! I asked them to say that Jesus was the only way to the Father( John 14:6)they kept on repeating it and adding that Jesus the spirit and the mother is the way. Why could they not just repeat what the Bible said? It is God's Word and Jesus said " no one comes to the Father except through me." I felt such a heaviness from them, no joy or peace. I ignored them and started to pray out loud, they got up, ready to leave while I was praying. They could not sit and listen to someone praying, if they could have, they would have ran out of the front door, but it was locked, we live in a country where we keep doors locked. I hope they learned something about grace and the love, joy and peace that you find only through Jesus Christ while they had to listen to my prayer. I am now praying for them that God will speak to them and save them from this false teachings.

  16. Brace yourselves, this is long.

I was approached by a man sitting near me at a Barnes and Noble asking about my faith late 2017. He asked if I were interested in doing a bible study after posing the question 'what if I told you that Jesus has/will return in our lifetime?' Admittedly I'm not a well studied Christian and although I had told him I did need to do bible study; I was really trying to tell him I didn't need to bible study with him (emphasized). He was so damn nice though I did give my number. I was quite worried he was of the Mormon variety. I ignored his calls for the next week and he eventually let me be. Contacted my sister and her husband, who is a non-denom pastor I respect and they weren't sure but it sounded off.

Fast forward a year later to just this last week he calls me again. I didn't recognize the number (didn't save it under his name) and picked it up. I agree to a bible study, partly because I felt guilty about ignoring him the first time. I was actually a little worried because I didn't know these people I actually brought protection just in case and didn't eat the snacks or drink the water till they did...lol. I showed up to a townhome in my area where a supposed member, a girl about my age, 20s/30s lived.

The house seemed almost antiseptic, almost like a model home. Continuing this tangent...bear with me...The furniture and interior design seemed neither completely random nor completely feng shui. I checked for signs that someone actually lived there, a pile of mail, keys I saw but otherwise not much. They proceeded to show me a video about the church. The TV was attached the wall, cool and the video was projected via laptop. No other cable box, modem, router, xbox, ps4, etc. Just thought that was strange. The video... lot of Koreans, whatever..lol, and a lot of philanthropy, awards, and giant get togethers of tens of thousands of people. My bible study buddy told me about additional prestigious awards and magazine articles that are supposedly a big deal. Working in marketing myself, I thought to myself how they've done a wonderful job setting up shop to appear legit.

    ReplyDelete
  17. We then go into the kitchen where there conveniently is a whiteboard installed to the wall above the fireplace (in this townhome we met at). Prior to the study, he asked the 3 of us to pray as individuals, which is unusual for me in the sense that in groups, I'm used to someone such as a leader praying over the group. He shows me the bible version he’s using, NIV, and explains they aren’t Mormon or Christian Scientists, Scientologist, etc. He then writes out notes on the white board as we bounce around various passages in Galatians, John, Revelations, Genesis, etc. He makes the case for God the Father AND God the Mother. At this point, I'm feeling a little uncomfortable inside. Mostly I am asked to read the passages we are going through and then he re-reads them and explains the COG interpretation of these passages. Keep in mind…we aren’t doing this in context of where the verses are in the bible but in context of all these disparate verses put together. Bible Study buddy keeps saying things like ‘logically’ and ‘reason’ to hammer home points on God the Mother. The whole time it felt like he was trying to get me to believe that God the Mother is currently alive and well and we know who she is. At this point I was just waiting for him to go “And there she is!” and point to the nice girl who’s townhouse we were in lol. He attempted to lead me through ‘logical’ steps about fathers and mothers and children and tie these to passages we were studying. I did pose traditional counter-arguments to my limited ability, again, because of my limited bible knowledge. He had ready answers for each of them which made sense in his context, but not to me. I can see how people go for this….but I’ve studied too much body language, linguistics, and the art of manipulation to be easily swayed to another point of view when these tools are used on me.

So the first bombshell they teach is that there is God the Mother and she is the one who gives us eternal life. He was trying to gauge me the whole time but I showed nothing but being a blank slate. Not too much skepticism, but not appearing to soak it up either. They invited me for another study this week which I agreed to. However, I went home and talked me sister and brother-in-law again, the most educated Christians I know and trust and they found the full name of the church, which let to my google search, which has since led me to this little blog. This is fascinating stuff and I just wanted to share my little story. I feel for those of you who have loved ones falling for a program like this.

The two easiest critiques I have for this COG is that 1. There is no mention of God the Mother in the bible. These folks are searching for something that isn’t there. God and Jesus spoke sometimes in parable and imagery, etc, but he did not create puzzles for us to put together. 2. John 14:6 Jesusanswered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
