Biblical Answers to the World Mission Society Church of God

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.--1 John 4:1

Are you or a loved one struggling with this group? Do you need Biblical answers about the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCoG or CoGWMS), their founder Ahnsahnghong (Ahn Sahng/Sang-Hong) or their current leader "Mother Jerusalem" (a.k.a. "Heavenly Mother God," Zang/Zahng Gil-Jah, or Chung Gil Cha)? Thank you for coming here. I hope my blog helps you. Questions and comments are always welcome.

The WMSCOG as a Cult

The World Mission Society Church of God founded by Ahnsahnghong (Ahn Sahng Hong), does not seem to mind being called a cult. They will take some of the known characteristics of cults, such as a change of personality for its members, and say that Christianity itself is also a cult if you follow those guidelines.

There are several definitions of the word "cult". If you use the definition, "a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.", then any religion can be called a cult. But from a Christian perspective, we'd use this definition, "a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader."

Here are other ways to tell if a group is a cult:
from Walter Martin's The Rise of the Cults,
"A cult, then, is a group of people polarized around someone's interpretation of the Bible and is characterized by major deviations from orthodox Christianity relative to the cardinal doctrines of the Christian faith, particularly the fact that God became man in Jesus Christ."

from Josh McDowell and John Stewart's Handbook of Today's Religions,
features that characterize cults include:
"New Truth....God has revealed something special to them. This is usually truth that has never before been revealed and supersedes and contradicts all previous revelations."
"New Interpretations of Scripture....[They] believe they alone have the key to interpreting the mysteries in the Bible."
"A Non-biblical Source of Authority....sacred writings or a source of authority that supersedes the Bible."
"Another Jesus....false teaching about the person of Jesus Christ in the light of historical biblical Christianity."
"Rejection of Orthodox Christianity....They argue that the church has departed from the true faith."
"Double-Talk....they say one thing publically but internally believe something totally different."
"Non-biblical Teaching on the Nature of God (Trinity)....deviation on the doctrine of the Trinity and the nature of God."
"Changing Theology....[members] will learn a doctrine only to find that doctrine later changed or contradicted by further revelation."
"Strong Leadership....central leader figures who consider themselves messengers of God with unique access to the Almighty....This strong leadership leads the cult follower unto total dependence upon the cult for belief, behavior and lifestyle."
"Salvation by Works....No one is taught in the cults that he can be saved from eternal damnation by simply placing his faith in Jesus Christ. It is always belief in Jesus Christ and 'do this' or 'follow that.'"
"False Prophecy....Cult leaders, who believe they have been divinely called by God, have made bold predictions of future events, supposedly revealed by the inspiration of God. Unfortunately, for the cult leaders, these predictions of future events do not come to pass. The one who prophesied is exposed as a false prophet."

If you are a Bible-believing Christian, then there is no doubt that the doctrines of the WMSCOG deviate from traditional Christianity. From that perspective, Ahnsahnghong's church is a cult. Watch out for it.

  1. I am so glad that this was posted. I had actually encountered the cult two days ago and thought I was the only one who knew of their ways and beliefs. Thankfully I know God and His word and was able not to get sucked into their cult. This is defninitely something that people need to beware of and watch out for because their teachings and acts are destructive in the long run.

  2. dude read the bible the Lord states clearly obey my ten commandments. not just love and believe in my son Jesus Christ.

Second History tells us that the Roman Empire persecuted the Lords son Jesus when he came forward and said he was the way the truth the light. The issue here is any and every religion can be labeled as a cult if you dig into their history deep enough. The Catholics have written their own scriptures, or course we know the Mormons have done the same. Many religions bend the bibles words to satisfy their beliefs. Got to be the other way around we must bend to gods will not him to ours. What he says goes no deviating from his commandments... I closing your whole theory is flawed as is expected because only one being was without flaws. Did you know the POPE calls himself the Vigor of Christ...TANSLATION from Websters Dictionary:

    1. exuberant and resilient strength of body or mind; vitality
    2. substantial effective energy or force: the vigour of the tempest
    3. forcefulness; intensity: the vigour of her complaints
    4. the capacity for survival or strong healthy growth in a plant or animal: hybrid vigour
    5. the most active period or stage of life, manhood, etc; prime
    6. chiefly ( US ) legal force or effectiveness; validity (esp in the phrase in vigour )

[C14: from Old French vigeur, from Latin vigor activity, from vigēre to be lively]

vigor or ( US ) vigor

  4. Dear anonymous 'dude',

First of all, comments need to be approved here because I've seen what happens when comments are not moderated. I don't want cut and pasted sermons from the wmscog clogging up by blog like what has unfortunately happened with Jamie's blog (find the link on my links page if you'd like to see for yourself).

Second, the word you wanted was "Vicar" of Christ, not "vigor" - completely different word. I'm sorry, but such a mistake doesn't reflect well on you and diminishes the impact of everything else you've said.

"only one being was without flaws" -- Yes, that was Jesus. I am imperfect like everyone, but if you disagree with my "theory" then you'll need to present a little more evidence. And please read all of my blog, not just a page or two. You might find your objections have already been addressed. (By the way, Ahnsahnghong is human and flawed also.)

"no deviating from his commandments" -- I assume you are talking about the Saturday Sabbath? Can you find a quote from the New Testament that directly commands the Saturday Sabbath to be kept?
Now how about lying? The wmscog approves lying for a good cause, a 'righteous lie.' Would you call that 'deviating from God's commandments'?

And lastly, "WOW cant remember the bible stating their will be one on earth that I the LORD will appoint as my fill-in while I am away from my children" -- How about Matthew 16:19, "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

  5. Genny,

Thanks for this. I was preyed upon by two members of the wmscog today. I am feeling extremely guilty now for not engaging them and helping them see the flaws in their reasoning. I am genuinely concerned for their well-being, it was like seeing two children playing traffic...

As they approached me I was overwhelmed with a feeling that I can only compare to an adrenaline rush. I was dumbfounded by their claims and they were very arrogant. You could tell that their defensiveness came out of desperation, like when you tell a salesman "no" and they come back at you with another offer because they need to sell you something to provide for their family. What is it that they have to lose, do they have a conversion quota?

I do not *push* my beliefs on other people but I do feel responsible to the youth of my community to be a responsible man of my faith. I am concerned that this group is focused on snatching new "members" and excommunicating them from their families and loved ones... I could go on all day about this, but thanks.

  6. Hi David. Glad to hear from you. I've felt guilty too after being caught off guard by 'evangelists' who need to hear the truth. But when that happens it give us the opportunity to see what's out there in the world and get prepared for when we meet such people again.
    Thanks for sharing your experience!
